Or guilty pleasure of a grown woman. Or I never do this but truly had to say something.
I saw “Eastern Promises” last night and though Anthony Lane from the New Yorker gave David Cronenberg’s film a less than favourable review he was right in saying that “in a way, this is a tribute to Mortensen”. I am in platonic love, not sure if with the Russian Siberia ex-con mob driver who looks like Viggo Mortensen, or with Viggo the Roman statue of a man he is. Looks aside Mortensen is a stupendous actor and as a person seems to have substance to him: he has an art publishing company, is an artist himself (his work is actually interesting), and is very political (the right kind of politics).
If i had already seen the film when I ran into him at the Four Season hotel during TIFF -him coming out of the elevator, me going in- I truly would have thrown myself at him. OK, maybe not.
It is worth mentioning that Denise Cronenberg did such a good job with the wardrobe. Mortensen and Cassel looked amazing, in the way that I imagine the nouveau riche Russian mob would look like. Mortensen was so immaculately groomed he could cut ice with his sharpness. I am sure I will see an editorial in L’Uomo Vogue inspired on this movie’s wardrobe. “Eastern promises” is excellent regardless of Mortensen,Cassel, or the wardrobe.
Joy to the eye: Vincent Cassel and Viggo Mortensen in one movie.
